KEYSTONE
way to find out was to stick with her, watch her. And watch the people around her. Any of them might have had a hand in the ugly events of recent weeks.
'Keystone can borrow a costume if he really wants to swim, can't he, Mack?' called Mabel, bent on making mischief.
The prospect of Keystone in a bathing-costume was overtaken by a more distracting spectacle. Roscoe Arbuckle had used the conversation to swim unperceived below the water to where the girls were sitting. The first they knew of it was when Mae Busch gave a shriek as Roscoe grabbed her ankles and dragged her into the pool.
Mae was in a two-piece costume consisting of a pink wrapover jacket and red and white striped drawers. The costume was attractive, but not designed for bathing. In the water it became diaphonous. Roscoe, below the surface, was oblivious of this. He expected Mae to wriggle, and she did. It was part of the amusement. He held his breath and stayed submerged, still holding on to her ankles.
Mack Sennett heard the commotion. He stopped his conversation with the Brennans and came closer to the pool in time to see Roscoe let go of Mae.
Mae did the only thing she could, swam on her front towards the shallow end. Under the stripes of red and white, her bottom bravely flexed and bobbed. Sennett held his sides and laughed.
The other girls were on their feet, safely out of Roscoe's reach. Minta had been trying to shout through five feet of water to her husband. Amber had her hands pressed to her mouth. Mabel's initial peal of laughter died away. She had her eyes on Sennett. She shouted, 'When you've seen enough, she might appreciate some help.'
